On June 8, 2021, the co-management associations in Zeila (also known as Saylac), Somaliland and Bander Beyla, Puntland will mark World Oceans Day with gatherings, a beach cleanup, speakers, and festivities to celebrate the ocean and all that it provides. As coastal communities dependent on fishing for income and food security, Zeila and Bander Beyla know firsthand the importance of this year’s World Oceans Day theme, “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods.” The co-management associations in both locations have worked tirelessly alongside their respective governments to improve fishing practices, advance environmental education, and manage local conflicts over fisheries resources. Bander Beyla fishers’ stories will be featured in the “Faces of the Sea” segment at 18:30 EAT as part of the UN World Oceans Day all-day event.
More information is available on the UN World Oceans Day website for the the Bander Beyla and Zeila events.
