Founded in 2010, Al Faraj Water Supply Company (“Al Faraj”) was established to provide an accessible and clean water supply to homes and commercial entities in the towns surrounding Mogadishu. The company, which is the only direct source of piped water services in the community, has a 200-meter borehole, 512-barrel water tank, and two diesel generators to pump water into the tank. The water tank is used for storage and as a direct distribution point for its clients. In 2017 the installment of greenhouses and a modern irrigation system contributed to a 34 percent profit increase for the company.
The demand for clean water in the community has outpaced the company’s capacity of 1,024 barrels of water per day (~200 m³). Through a Shuraako-facilitated investment, the company was able to further expand its clean water service by increasing its production and storage capacity. With the investment, the company was able to dig an additional borehole, construct an additional water tank, and procure a solar water pumping system, further reducing its dependence on diesel power.
