Bullaale Farm was established in 2013 as a beekeeping and honey production facility in Somaliland. Although the farm has around 1,300 beehives, it has expanded to growing cash crops such as watermelon and garlic, along with tree fruits like papaya. It also has a seedling nursery which grows ready-to-plant seedlings which are purchased by both starting and established farmers. Bullaale Farm previously cultivated 35 of its 59 hectares via flood irrigation run on diesel generators.
In 2020, Bullaale Farm was approved for a loan from the Nordic Horn of Africa Opportunities Fund to install solar panels and a drip irrigation system, replacing the everyday use of the diesel generators and flood irrigation. Using the funds from this investment, Bullaale Farm aims to reduce fuel expenses by 50%. Additionally, they plan to use their new irrigation system to cultivate 20 more hectares over five years. Funds from the loan will also be used to purchase cooling storage for fruits and vegetables, allowing Bullaale Farm to keep produce for longer post-harvest. Overall, the expansion will assist Bullaale Farm in becoming more sustainable and environmentally conscious.
