Founded in 2013, Dualeh Farm (“Dualeh”) is a 3.25-hectare farm that produces fruit and vegetable products for sale to local markets in Somaliland. The company’s vegetable products are mainly sold to local markets and are also exported to Djibouti. Historically, the farm had been using only a small portion of its land for traditional farming due to irrigation issues, but it has since invested in the digging of several berkads, or water reservoirs, meant to store a large quantity of rainfall. The farm has also procured four water tanks to increase storage capacity. While the water reservoirs expanded Dualeh’s production capacity, the company was still constrained due to only 75 percent (2.5 ha) of the farm being utilized for commercial crop production.
Through a Shuraako-brokered investment, the farm was able to procure and install irrigation pipes to connect the water tanks, berkads, and current irrigation system to its crops, thus completing a robust, modern irrigation system and expanding farmland usage. The investment also supported the farm in installing a greenhouse, further ensuring increased production, by increasing the capacity of year-round crop production. Dualeh was also able to procure a transport truck, enabling it to reach local markets while reducing reliance on truck rentals. Collectively, this Shuraako-facilitated investment allowed the company to manage its growth effectively.
