Secure Fisheries hosted the second annual two-day Fisheries Conflict Symposium on November 8-9, 2018. The two-day symposium convened 21 members of the Fisheries Conflict Research Consortium, each providing diverse thematic and geographic expertise and sharing interest in and concern about rising fisheries conflict.
The symposium opened with a keynote speech by Dr. Ian Ralby, of I.R. Consilium, who discussed the complicated and growing intersection of illegal fishing with other forms of illicit trade and trafficking. The symposium established interdisciplinary partnerships, increased understanding of global fisheries conflicts and their drivers, and generated ideas to proactively address fisheries conflicts. Secure Fisheries will maintain the annual Fisheries Conflict Symposium and continue to expand the Fisheries Conflict Research Consortium to ensure it represents diverse perspectives.
